R-1 Battery Not Included: Assessing Complex Communication Needs of Students Who Cannot Access Formalized Testing
Presenter
Format and Time
- In-Person Training: 5 hours (8:30-2:30)
Content
When students cannot access formal language or cognitive test batteries, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are often left without clear guidance for what to do next. This interactive training focuses on assessing students with extensive support needs, including those with complex motor, sensory, and communication profiles whose abilities cannot be captured through traditional testing. Participants will learn how to recognize intentional communication, identify meaningful response patterns, and gather valid assessment information even when standardized tools are not appropriate. This session includes hands-on activities, case discussion, and opportunities to explore assessment materials.
Intended Audience
Speech-Language Pathologists working with students who have complex communication needs, including those conducting Augmentative-Alternative Communication (AAC) assessments or evaluating students with extensive support needs. This intermediate-level course is designed for SLPs who are familiar with assessment concepts and are ready to apply more advanced frameworks.
Participants Will
- Analyze student behaviors and response patterns to differentiate intentional communication from non-communicative behavior during assessment.
- Apply observational frameworks to identify and interpret communicative acts in students with complex motor, sensory, and communication profiles.
- Evaluate and select appropriate assessment tools and strategies when standardized testing is not accessible.
