Content

In the busy world of special education, successful individualized education plan (IEP) implementation is often stifled by a fragmented provision of services. Barriers often make collaboration among the professionals on the team minimal, leading to gaps and redundancies in service provision, reducing the effectiveness of the IEP, and negatively impacting the provision of free appropriate public education (FAPE). School-based related service providers are often highly trained within their discipline; however, due to packed schedules and lack of training in multi-disciplinary collaboration, individual members of the IEP team too often work in isolation to assess and provide services. Working collaboratively as a team with professionals from different disciplines is essential to ensuring that students receive adequate and appropriate services. This training provides practical strategies for facilitating and streamlining a collaborative provision of services for multi-disciplinary school-based teams, considering the realities and demands of providing special education services in public schools.

Intended Audience

Related services providers (speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, school-based mental health service providers, etc.), special education teachers, program specialists/coordinators

  1. Identify their unique role as a member of the IEP team, including how their expertise relates to individual students' educational programming and how their services are related to the provision of FAPE.
  2. Develop understanding of the need for collaboration among related service providers and other members of the IEP team.
  3. Acquire knowledge of practical strategies to implement a collaborative model of service provision on their caseloads.
