Content

Programs for students with moderate-to-extensive support needs require a highly individualized and holistic approach that considers their learning styles and varied abilities. Additionally, educators must understand how each student uses pre-symbolic and/or symbolic forms of communication to get their needs met. This training will provide an overview of developmental milestones, implications for learning and behavior, and help educators match developmentally appropriate curriculum, instructional strategies, and behavior supports with each student's learner profiles using effective, evidence-based teaching strategies. Key principles and strategies that may be used to guide educational planning and support progress toward Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) goals include providing differentiated instruction, multi-sensory learning opportunities, and allowing students to develop functional life skills that are relevant to their everyday lives. Additionally, educators must provide opportunities for students to practice applying skills within the context of meaningful activities to support generalization. This training will provide educators with practical tools including visual supports, increasing active engagement, and supporting positive behavior.
