Selective Mutism (SM) is an anxiety-based disorder that is often misunderstood and mismanaged. This introductory training focuses on the key characteristics and diagnostic criteria and includes an overview of intervention strategies. A collaborative approach that best supports a child with this diagnosis will be discussed, as well as the potential role of the speech-language pathologist in assessment and treatment.
Intended Audience
School psychologists, speech-language pathologists, classroom teachers, program specialists, and other school personnel working with students with SM
Participants Will
- Identify the criteria used to diagnose SM.
- Identify at least three intervention strategies.
- Identify potential members of a collaborative team appropriate for children with SM.
